The country of Sault
The country of Sault
The village of Marsa is located in the country of Sault.
With a total surface area of 600 square kilometers, the Pays de Sault is the piedmont of the Aude Pyrenees.
It is bordered to the north by the country of Razès (Limoux and Chalabre), to the south by the Madres massif culminating at 2469 m; to the west by the Tabe massif (Pic St Barthélemy at 2348 m) overlooking the upper Ariège valley (Ax-les-Thermes) and finally to the west by the Corbières, separated from the plateau by the valley of the Aude natural barrier between these two entities.
It is therefore a plain of altitude (between 850 and 1250 m) well cut by the Rebenty valley and protected on all sides by massive and by the valley of the Aude dotted with steep and inaccessible gorges. this country has been living on the sidelines since time immemorial.
The country of Sault has always exploited the same resources - ubiquitous forest and livestock - but slowly opens to tourism. The thick woods are home to a rich fauna and easy to observe: deer, wild boars, and on the heights, marmots and chamois.
We understand better by its situation, that this country has always served as a place of refuge for the Visigoths and Cathars and closer to our history, the resistance (maquis of Picaussel Belvis)
